While weather always is difficult to predict, the forecast shows it will be raining golf balls Saturday at The Hotel Beacon in Renfrew.
The American Red Cross in Butler County is partnering with the Butler County Humane Society for the second year in a row for the Golf Ball Drop fundraiser. The event will kick off at 11 a.m. WPXI-TV’s Chopper 11 will dump 1,000 golf balls at 12:30 p.m. onto a green created on The Hotel Beacon’s grounds.
The owner of the first ball to go into the hole (or the ball closest to the pin) will win $1,000. The individually numbered golf balls sell for $10 each. All proceeds support the two charities.
Scott Snyder, executive director of the Red Cross in Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties, said he came up with the idea for the event after researching similar Red Cross events online.
“Last year, the American Red Cross and the Butler County Humane Society had the idea to partner on a truly unique fundraiser,” he said. “That’s when we came up with the idea of the Golf Ball Drop. Once we had the idea in place, we approached Channel 11, and the folks at the station were more than happy to work with us, especially since the event benefits two very worthy causes in our community.”
This year’s Golf Ball Drop will be held as part of The Hotel Beacon’s autumn festivities, which includes a 10-acre maze. The event also includes food, games, raffles and the chance to win a Steelers prize pack with five tickets to see the Steelers play the Cincinnati Bengals Dec. 4.
