Incumbent Rep. Metcalfe Moves on to General Election With No Challenger
Write-in candidate Steve Smith says he will not pursue representing the 12th District in the House of Representatives.
The votes are in, and incumbent state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, will seek his eighth term representing the 12th Legislative District in the fall general election.
Barring a write-in campaign, he will not face a challenger in November.
After launching a last-minute write-in campaign to take on Metcalfe in the primary election, Steve Smith, principal of Haine Middle School in the Seneca Valley School District, said he is pulling himself out of the race.
No candidate had filed to run on the Democratic ballot, and Metcalfe had been unopposed on the Republican ballot before Smith announced his write-in campaign earlier this month.
To appear on the ballot in the November general election, Smith, a Republican, needed to win 300 write-in votes on the Democratic ticket or more votes than any other candidate. To win a spot on the Republican ballot, he needed to win more votes than Metcalfe on the Republican ticket.
With 100 percent of the Butler County precincts reporting in the primary Tuesday, Butler County Elections Bureau officials said 305 Democratic write-in votes were cast in the 12th District.
The candidate or candidates who won those votes, however, may not be determined for at least another week, according to the Elections Bureau. The County Return Board is scheduled to meet Friday to begin computing and canvassing the returns of the primary.
Until then, all results are unofficial. Metcalfe could not be reached for comment.
Even if he alone received all 305 write-in votes, Smith said that amount is not enough to warrant running against Metcalfe, who received 5,599 Republican votes—or 92.27 percent of the vote. There also were 469 votes cast for a Republican write-in candidate or candidates.
Smith said he would have continued in the race if his polling numbers were closer to the majority of votes Metcalfe received from residents.
“That shows you have enough support, and if they believed in this I would work to represent them,” he said. “With those numbers, they just didn’t have that belief.”
Calling it a learning experience, Smith said he does not regret staging his write-in campaign. In the last two weeks, Smith said he has met and talked with more people about issues in the area than he ever has before. For that, he was thankful.
“The time they gave me, and the support, it was huge,” he said of meeting with constituents.
Smith said he decided to run for the House of Representatives after hearing a number of people gripe about the current representation, the condition of roads, the economy, education, taxes and other issues. Despite the complaints, Smith said Tuesday’s numbers showed most voters are happy with the way things are.
“We kind of get what we ask for,” he said. “Instead of complaining, I’m the one who stood up and said I care enough to do it. I took that chance. I told my wife, when I look back on it, I’m happy. I think I started a conversation.”
His brief experience in the political world also reaffirmed his love for working with children and educators. Smith said he did not take time away from his duties at Haine Middle School Tuesday to visit the polling locations. He plans to report to work as usual Wednesday.
“Tomorrow, I can walk in and hold my head up high and say I tried,” he said. “When things happen down the road, when people are still complaining about taxes and everything else, I can say I did step up for it.”
The 12th District covers Cranberry, Adams, Clinton, Forward, Jefferson, Middlesex and Penn townships and the boroughs of Callery, Connoquenessing, Evans City, Mars, Saxonburg, Seven Fields and Valencia.

Now I, for one, can only hope the re-districting goes through and we get rid of Metcalfe that way! With me, it's not about him and the teachers, it's about him being a wanna be US Rep or Senator when he should be working on PA issues at hand!

YOU, like so many are so GROSSLY UNINFORMED. Most Democrats seem to be HAND FED the LIBERAL PAP. Sorry to hear that YOU PREFER the TEACHERS and ADMINISTRATORS unions that are DRIVING MOST PROPERTY OWNERS into the POOR HOUSE. The ONLY other conclusion that one can reach REGARDING YOUR STATEMENTS is that YOU are related or a friend of the LIBERAL TEACHERS' UNIONS that prefer to sell this Country down the river. There may come a time in the future when INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS may have to REVERT to BANKRUPTCY in order to OPEN UP these GROSSLY OVERVALUED Dept. of Education Employees' Contracts. Then we may have some sanity in how we operate our School Districts. The other issue may be more relevant. Incentive pay for TEACHERS based on STUDENT PROGRESS.

Uninformed?? Wow, the FACTS show that imposing Metcalfe's agenda is not a resolution to the budget problems nor is collective bargaining and unions the cause of the current problems. I also found it interesting that he slams teachers for the same benefits/pension that he receives. Teachers DO contribute to their health care and teachers DO pay up to 10% of their salary to their pensions as well. Daryl does not! Teachers don’t get a tax payer funded car allowance, meal allowance, and mileage reimbursement however. What a hypocrite!!
Miranda, I am sure you already know this since you are so "informed". But for the rest of you "grossly uniformed" liberals here are some FACTS not rants
- There are 5 states that have laws that make collective bargaining explicitly illegal. (SC, NC, GA, VA, & TX) Wisconsin is still in court so I guess you could say 6.
http://www.maproomblog.com/2011/02/map_of_state_collective_bargaining_rights.php
- According to www.usgovernmentspending.com those states rank (26, 35, 39, 42 & 49th respectively) in State and Local Debt!!!
- Of the 15 states that have the lowest debt 8 of them are "Union" states that have collective bargaining rights for teachers.
As you can see there is NO connection between high state deficits/debts and collective bargaining/unions.

What a moronic argument you present! If only 5 states forbid collective bargaining (http://www.maproomblog.com/2011/02/map_of_state_collective_bargaining_rights.php) the majority of the top 15 have to be states that allow collective bargaining. Did you actually read what you wrote?
As for the state and local debt rankings (http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/state_debt_rank), the actual rankings for non-collective bargaining states are:
SC - 46
NC - 8
GA - 5
VA - 11
TX - 35
WI - 33
Since Wisconsin only recently joined the ranks, they shouldn't be factored into this argument. So 3 out of the 5 are in your top 15. You might also look into SC and TX with more detail. Specifically TX as they do everything by referendum. Their debt is incurred by voter concurrence. They also can afford it.

If anyone would know mororonic it would be you!! The real question is did YOU read what I wrote? If what you say is true and half of the top 14 are Union and half are not Union then Unions are NOT THE CAUSE OF DEBT!
If eliminating the evil Unions is the panacea to fixing the economy then why are so many non-union states in such horrible debt???!!!

I sure do recognize it as your posts! Everyone of those states are in debt. You imply that unions have little to do with debt when they are the major cause.

Boy (aka captain obvious) (aka captain avoid the question) (aka captain contradiction)!! Yes they all have debt, your point is, and I am quoting you, "unions are the major cause" of debt. Shouldn't ONLY the union states be at the top of the debt list then??
You are the prime example of someone that has not done their homework and only has the Daryl talking points memorized. When you have to provide facts/proof you can't!

Smith represented the parasitic government workers who want ever-increasing taxes from us. I'm more than tired of the misuse of my money which is confiscated and often wasted. Metcalfe is representing my values quite well.

A Conservative representative would embrace his challenge's with calm wisdom knowing what he stands for means something. Our fellow doesn't have that depth.
His party is faithful and he is basically harmless, unless, you desire open discussion, Smaller government, a thinker with the tools (if they are involved) to layout with locals a plan and strategy toward progress and business expansion.
Meatcalf is going for his eighth term, judge for yourself his representative qualities. He is gathering all he can while he represents an area with apathetic citizens, public unions househols, dual-income families very busy in life's pursuits.
Seems like a fit to me, after all the locals pay for operating the Township, "built for you". You get what in inspect, not what you expect.

This article isn't strictly correct, as the last I knew, anyone who was not registered D or R at the time of the primary can run as an independent against Metcalfe, and has until August to get themselves on the ballot. So, it is not a certainty yet that he will be unopposed.
If any independent chooses to run, I've got a big check for them.

I'm very disappointed in Mr. Smith. He walked away from this before even getting a vote count and after running a no budget. last minute campaign. Not something to hold one's head high about.
Leaving us with two more years of Metcalfe. What a shame!

My previous post may have been a bit harsh regarding Mr. Smith. He's right, at least he tried. The problem is that his withdrawl simply serves to strengthen the belief that Metcalfe is unbeatable. When, in fact, if someone were to front a well run campaign and expose Metcalfe's extremism, I believe he is vulnerable. However, you have to get the word out, effectively, throughout the entire district and that takes a lot of door knocking effort and money to energize interest by the, otherwise, apathetic voter.
I know for a fact, there are those, especially here in Cranberry, who would help with both...given the right candidate.

You are so right. Metcalf is an embarrassment to this entire community. He acts like this is his own little kingdom. He needs to move on to his life's work.
Maybe he can be a teacher.

Part 1:
It saddens me to read some of the posts to this article. It saddens me, yet it doesn’t surprise me. I see the usual comments and turns of phrase: “Smith represented the parasitic government workers who want ever-increasing taxes from us…” Now, there’s an original thought. I’ve only seen that same comment in slightly different prose about 4,356 times before.
And, what about that comment? The author would like us to believe that all people who work in government, e.g. education, want higher taxes. It’s a non-debatable fact. If you’re a teacher or administrator you want everyone to pay more, as well. What about others who work for a school district? Do custodians want higher taxes? They’re government workers, right? So, I guess they do, which makes them parasites. It’s interesting how one group is considered parasites while others are not.
Doug seems to be fine with the fact that Daryl Metcalfe and other state legislators enjoy tremendous perks – high salaries, great health benefits, outstanding pensions, state-paid phones, etc. He seems eager to line up and hand over his tax money to them so they can enjoy such perks. “Here you go; take my money. You all have earned it!” Yet, educators and other government workers are the parasites.

Part 2:
It just doesn’t seem to add up to me, though. While certainly not a perfect system, at least school districts have school boards comprising members of the community who have a say in what employees are paid. Where is that system of checks and balances in state government? There isn’t one. If Daryl and his colleagues want more money, they give themselves more. If they want better benefits, they give themselves better benefits. And, so on.
Tell me Doug; why is that okay? Why do you see no problem with that, yet you have such distain for government workers? Are your beliefs rooted in steadfast principles that never waiver, or do they change depending on whom you apply them to? My guess is the latter, which means they are not principles at all.
A potential challenger for Daryl has dropped out. And that fact, for some, is cause for celebration. Is that your idea of a representative republic? Where one man holds the position for so long that it becomes his career? Do you really think that’s what the framers of our nation envisioned? I don’t think so, not by a long shot.

Here’s a novel idea for everyone to consider. Instead of blindly following someone just because he or she carries the same political affiliation as you; instead of willingly parroting back what that person says; instead, consider each situation and base your decisions on the facts. Don’t make blanket characterizations about entire groups of people. Such thinking benefits no one.
And, most of all, remember that Seneca Valley is a school district that we all can be proud of. Each child can have an outstanding education. But we, as adults, must work hard to make sure that happens.

Teachers Unions and Administrators throughout the state appear to take great liberties with the taxpayers’ money. THEY seem to TOTALLY IGNORE the effect of the economy on property owners in the State. Their IGNORANCE and INDIFFERENCE to the PROPERTY TAXPAYERS is COMPOUNDED by the BIZZARE and BIASED comments they are concocting on this article on Cranberry Patch. State Rep might request a Referendum: 1. “As a PROPERTY TAX OWNER, do YOU FAVOR CONTINUING TAX INCREASES YEAR after YEAR to PROVIDE CADILLAC monthly RETIREMENT PAYMENTS to TEACHERS in YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT?.” 2. DO YOU as a PROPERTYTAX PAYER FAVOR A CONTINUING TAX INCREASE EACH and EVERY YEAR to PROVIDE CARTE BLANCH HEALTH CARE BENEFITS IN RETIREMENT which would allow TEACHERS pay ONLY a $10 COPAY for HEALTHCARE while YOU as the PROPERTY TAXPAYERS pay some $700 per month in premiums for YOUR health care. A THIRD QUESTION could be INJECTED requesting your insight as a PROPERTY TAXPAYER as to whether YOU as a PROPERTY TAXPAYERS feel that TEACHERS’ STRIKES should be allowed in THIS STATE. Keep in mind that Teachers’ unions are the ONLY unions which are NOT PENALIZED for time on the PICKET line. If you are in a union OTHER than the TEACHERS’ UNION, you LOSE money. These “SUPPOSED” TEACHERS do NOT lose a CENT. The TEACHERS impose a PENALTY on the School children and their parents. The SOONER that these Teachers’ UNIONS SUFFER a PENALTY, the SOONER they will sit down and BARGAIN FAIRLY.

Are you serious? Let's put it into basic terms that you as a BAGA may understand. Many of YOUR FELLOW citizens have to do WITHOUT the ESSENTIALS. Seniors, in some cases, are doing without their MEDICATION so as to pay their PROPERTY TAXES and MAINTAIN the home that they may have lived in for some 30 or 40 years. Are you aware that some people in YOUR community do without food and clothing in some cases so that they can KEEP that HOME that they have WORKED so hard for? I do realize that teachers PROBABLY lack the COMPASSION and EMPATHY for these FELLOW CITIZENS and PREFER to be GLUTTONS FEEDING at the PUBLIC TROUGH. It is appalling to know that teachers lack the desire to do the right thing rather than continue to push their fellow citizens over the brink to the point of losing their homes. I would assume that MOST of US have more compassion than that and prefer NOT to VICTIMIZE our fellow citizens. I'm sorry that YOU feel that by paying your taxes makes it acceptable to BURDEN fellow taxpayers at a time when our economy is as bad as it is. It IS Preferable for most of us THAT THIS BE PUT ON A referendum. The last thing that the Teachers want is the REFERNDUM vote AS THEN WE MAY KNOW see REFLECTED the feelings of the MAJORITY of our citizens who have supported this community for decades.

It appears that Daryl has found the methodology the School District's teachers use to obtain the Waivers to provide the HIKE in TAXPAYERS' PROPERTY TAXES WITHOUT the TAXPAYER'S KNOWLEDGE. What is surprising to my family and friends is the LACK of DECENCY and INTEGRITY in NOT REQUESTING the TAXPAYERS' PROSPECTIVE on this issue. IT is reprehensible and DECEITFUL. And to think that these people are SUPPOSEDLY teaching our FUTURE citizens of the community. By the way, Butch and ALSO the TEACHERS" UNION, WHAT is wrong with REQUESTING the TAXPAYERS' OPINIONS and CONCERNS? Why have you not offered, IN ALL FAIRNESS, the PROPERTY TAXPAYERS the opportunity to have their opinion known PUBLICLY? I believe that Miranda is CORRECT. THEY call that a PUBLIC REFERENDUM.
