Reader Scott Jugan captured this photo of lightning striking near his Cranberry home.

At least two homes in Cranberry were struck by lightning during Wednesday night’s heavy storms. Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company members also were called out for a telephone pole fire reported on Franklin Road.

“We pretty much had trucks all over the township for a while,” said fire Chief Brian Kovac.

Kovac said lightning struck a home on Strawberry Circle at about 8:20 p.m. Less than 15 minutes later, lightning struck a home on Azure Court in the Blueridge Estates neighborhood. Both homes are located off Powell Road.

Kovac said neither home caught fire. The home on Azure Courts sustained minor damage when the strike knocked a few bricks from a chimney, he said.

“We checked the houses thoroughly inside and out,” he said.

As of 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Penn Power reported about 580 customers in Cranberry were without power.

Cranberry police also were called to a traffic signal that was in flash at the intersection of Freedom and Haine School Road.
