Cranberry-area residents should be on the lookout for a combination of gusty winds with a brief —but heavy—snowfall Sunday evening. 

At about 5 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for western Pennsylvania, including Butler County.

The service’s radar in Pittsburgh indicated heavy snow showers with the leading edge along a line extending from 5 miles west of Cooperstown to 3 miles west of Pine Grove moving east at 50 mph. Visibility will drop to half a mile or less with the passage of this line. A quick inch of snow may also accumulate, the service said.  

Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph are possible. A wind advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. Sunday.

In addition, temperatures will quickly fall below freezing as the line passes through the area. As a result, untreated pavement could become slippery. The service warns motorists and pedestrians to use caution on the roads.
