Butler Named One of Best Small Towns in America: What Do You Think?
Smithsonian magazine includes the county seat in its listing of the top 20 areas.
The seat of Butler County has joined Naples, Fla., Taos, N.M. and Durango, Colo. on the list of top communities in America.
Butler was ranked no. 7 in the May issue of Smithsonian magazine’s annual review of the 20 Best Small Towns in America.
Focusing on towns with populations of less than 25,000, the magazine said it chose the top communities based on information from systems company Esri of areas with high concentrations of museums, historic sites, botanic gardens, resident orchestras, art galleries and other cultural assets common to big cities.
Butler was lauded for having its own baseball team—the Butler BlueSox—community symphony, theater and barbershop chorus. The magazine also noted Butler’s successful Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival. A key factor in World War II, the Bantam Jeep was invented in Butler.
The community held its inaugural jeep festival last August and broke a Guinness World Record for the longest parade of Jeeps. The event also attracted about 30,000 visitors to Butler. This year’s festival will be held Aug. 10-12.
Great Barrington, MA ranked no. 1 on Smithsonian’s list with touristy Taos coming in at second place. Also in the top 20 destinations were Key West, Fla., Laguna Beach, Calif and Gig Harbor, Wash.
